What does nez living stand for?

‘naz’ (noun) means "the assurance or pride in knowing that the other's love is unconditional and unshakable" this comes from the Urdu language. We then changed the 'a' into an 'e' to match part of the first name of our founder Vanessa - giving us ‘nez’.

‘living’ added to the name came from our desire to inspire and motivate an intentional lifestyle with our values and practices.

Products & sustainability

What is the difference between bio-based and biodegradable?

These two can be quite confusing, but don’t worry you can find all the necessary information here.

How do you come up with your names for the products?

The names for our products are based on inspirational female environmental activists. The world needs more of these young women taking charge - maybe you’re the next one?

How can I find out about new products and promotions?

Find all new offers, promotions, and products in our newsletter, blog, Instagram, and Pinterest.

Are your products biodegradable?

Our products in itself are not biodegradable. This means that microbes in the environment cannot break down all materials from our products and use them as a food source. Certain parts of our products contain a small amount of plastic / polyester, even if it is recycled, plastic / polyester is not biodegradable. Read more about it here.

Are your products 100% bio-based?

No, they are not 100% bio-based. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) defines a biobased material as "a material is an organic material in which carbon is derived from a renewable resource via biological processes. Biobased materials include all plant and animal mass derived from CO2 recently fixed via photosynthesis, per definition of a renewable resource." Certain parts of our products contain fossil materials which are not renewable, therefore can our products not be 100% bio-based - but hopefully one day! Read more about this here.

What is so special or sustainable about your embossing?

Nothing is particularly special about our embossing, it is a conscious choice to use foil stamping even though we know that a plastic foil is used to transfer the pigment and that in general a small percentage of fossil materials is used. However given the current status of development in the industry, we feel that this methodology with all its flaws is still providing the best balance between having a very low CO2 emission and providing the quality we require here at nez living.

Read more on our conscious choices for materials here.

How are your products produced?

Only by trusted partners in Europe:

- Bookbinding and printing in Germany;

- Elastics and organic cotton is produced and colored in Austria;

- Vegan leather from Italy.

All companies are small mostly family-run factories, free of child labor, and with focus on a socially responsible production.

Which colours are used to dye your VEGEA leather?

Only REACH compliant colours are used to dye the vegan leather.

What is the CO2 impact of one notebook?

The CO2 impact of 1 notebook is 4.04 kg of CO2. Read the full report on our emissions here. We do however compensate >100% per notebook. For more info on our impact and our collaboration with CHOOOSE go to sustainability.

What materials do you use for your products?

You can find an in depth overview of all materials used, their features, and impact on our dedicated section on our materials.

What is the difference between water and traditional PU?

With water-PU no chemical solvents are used in the process - we attempt to avoid chemicals in any way we can.

Are your products vegan?

YES, our products are all vegan!

Do you compensate your carbon footprint?

Yes, we do. We collaborate with CHOOOSE and compensate even more than our calculated carbon footprint. Find much more information in our 'sustainability’ section or read the full report on our emissions.

What does sustainability mean to you?

We approach sustainability via a holistic view and a Circular Economy mindset, by supporting the 6 R’s: Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Repurpose, Recycle, and Recover. Read much more about our sustainability approach here.

What is the difference between traditional cotton and organic cotton?

Organic cotton is produced and certified to organic agricultural standards, where production is based on natural processes. This is healthier for soils, ecosystems, and people. There is no use of toxic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified organisms), the water saving is 88% and energy saving is 62%. Basically, organic cotton is just better all around, for both the planet and people - you can go and read much more about it here.

Are all of your fossil materials, like plastic or polyester, for 100% recycled?

No, unfortunately our suppliers have not managed to offer recycled options for all our materials. Virgin fossil materials are still used for: stamping foil, water-based dispersion, and small amounts of vegan leather. You can read all the details here.

Why do you have 3 bookmarks?

We have done that to give you the flexibility of having different sections in your notebooks and giving you the ability to keep track of all of them.

Why do you have a minimum packaging approach although you offer luxury products?

Based on our sustainability approach, we support a strategy where excess materials are avoided, therefore we minimise our packaging. You can read more on this here.
